Every time you turn around there’s a new hair trend in motion. Ever wanted to try one of these trends but you were not sure how it would suit your face? Ever cut your hair into a short style and it wasn’t what you
expected? Even with virtual hair-styler programs there’s always the possibility that a style may not turn out how you’ve imagined. Knowledge is the key, so I am going to provide you with some basic tips on face shapes and what style compliment them.
For starters, did you know an “oval face” is considered the perfect face shape? These guidelines will help those that do not have an oval shaped face create the illusion of one and those that do enhance their features.
Round Face: wide with a rounded jaw and hairline. With this shape you want a style that will create the illusion of length in the face. You can do this buy adding height/volume at the crown and minimizing the volume at the sides. Oblong: long and narrow. With this shape you want styles that will shorten and widen your appearance. You can create this illusion by:
- keeping the overall length to your hair short. Since your face shape is long, longer hair would only make your face appear longer.
- adding bangs, which will make the face appear shorter because its covering a portion of the face.
- adding volume to the sides. This will make your face look more oval than narrow.

Square: forehead and jaw line are almost, if not, equal in width. With this shape you want styles that will add softness to your facial contour. Diamond: high- narrow forehead, wide cheekbones and pointed chin. Hairstyles for this look should reduce the width of cheekbones and soften vertical lines in the face. To create the illusion of an oval face you would want to avoid pulling the hair away from the sides. Instead keep the hair full in the forehead and close to the chin areas. Triangle/Pear: wide jaw and narrow face. Styles should expand forehead width and slim the jaw area. Styling the hair towards the chin area will help the jaw area look smaller, along with bangs to disguise forehead and volume in the crown/forehead areas. Inverted Triangle/Heart: wide forehead with a narrow chin/jaw area. With this facial shape you want styles that will add volume to the chin/jaw areas. Partial bangs are good for this face shape because they will offset the width of forehead. Minimizing the volume in the crown area but adding volume to the jaw area will help as well. Oval Face Shapes: the oval face is the most versatile face. You can pull off almost any look — short or long, straight or wavy. But for the most flattering look on you, consider your best feature and highlight it with your haircut. If you have gorgeous bone structure, consider an angular bob that shows off your chin.
